Activities on Ullswater Sailing ~ Windsurfing ~ Fishing ~ Angling ~ Rowing ~ Motor Cruising Most of Ullswater's lake bed is owned by either the Dalemain Estates, The National Trust or the Lake District National Park Authority; most of the shoreline is privately owned, however there are various points around the lake where it is permissible to launch sailboards and small craft. Please note that whilst the twenty-two miles of lake shoreline has many inviting beaches, with shallow waves rippling over sparkling stones, the land beneath the water shelves suddenly and deeply, and where it is deeper, it is very, very cold. Ullswater, A Lake User's Guide, is an informative leaflet produced by The Lake District National Park Authority and can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre at Glenridding.
Fishing or Angling,
whichever you prefer to call it, is mostly for Brown Trout (15th
March to 30th September) and
Perch (June to March). In Ullswater, Goldrill Beck and Brother's Water you do not
require a permit, but a National Rivers Authority rod licence must
be held, and can be purchased on a daily, weekly or annual basis from either the Pooley Bridge or
Glenridding Tourist Information Centre. Brown Trout can be fished
in the River Eamont which flows from Ullswater, but a permit is
required. Permits can be purchased from Charles Sykes Sports Shop,
4 Great Dockray, Penrith. 017684 862418. Small motor boats
(maximum speed 10 mph) and rowing boats can be hired on

The Outward Bound Trust: Ullswater Centre and Howtown Centre Swimming and Diving. There are numerous little public beaches around the lake, and deep pools in the rivers and becks that flow from the surrounding valleys. Whilst shallow areas are warmer, the deep water is breathtakingly cold, even on hot days, and the lake bottom shelves steeply. You are advised not to allow children to swim unsupervised and not to swim alone. |
