~ ULLSWATER ~

View of Ullswater from Pooley Bridge

Around Ullswater, the second largest lake in the English Lake District, are some of the top UK hotels and three rosette restaurants, country house hotels and cosy farmhouses offering homely fare with bed and breakfast, plus a wide selection of self-catering holiday cottages and discreet camping and caravan sites, and wonderful wedding venues.

On the clean clear lake there are facilities for quiet watersports: sailing, sail-boarding, fishing and cruising, while the surrounding valleys and mountains provide a vast variety of walks from short amble to challenging hill walking. There are also facilities for other healthy outdoor activities such as horse-riding, cycling, mountain-biking, rock-climbing and many more.

There are villages and hamlets with shops for essentials and souvenirs; inns, cafés and restaurants for refreshments to suit most tastes and budgets.

Sunshine is not guaranteed but even when the mountains are shrouded in a mysteriously moving mist, revealing and concealing the streaking white waterfalls, or a brisk wind gusts down from Patterdale, whipping the water into white horses that race the length of the lake to Pooley Bridge, Ullswater is still breathtakingly beautiful.

In a lifetime of living in or visiting the Lake District, you could never tire of Ullswater, never fail to be inspired or soothed by it.
