Ullswater Walking

Walking Around Ullswater

For walking, you are spoiled for choice around Ullswater. There are literally hundreds of footpaths, tracks and quiet lanes, (riverside, lakeside, woodland, valley and mountain), to suit all levels of enthusiasm and ability. Wainwright’s famous Coast to Coast Walk also passes through Patterdale.

Useful Information for Walkers

You are advised to be adequately dressed, shod and equipped for your walk, and, if going onto the fells, check the weatherline 017687 75757. Or check out the Lake District Weather online. You can also now see a 5 day Weather Forecast for Helvellyn.

Ordnance Survey maps that cover the area are the
1:50 000 Penrith and Keswick map
ISBN 0-319-222690-5, and the 1:25 000 English Lakes North Eastern area ISBN no 0-319-23444-4 Click here to Buy Lake District OS Maps Online.

There are an enormous number of books which cover walking in the Lake District. The Amazon on-line bookshop will give you a choice of 629 titles if you enter Lake District in the Book search! The tourist information centre carries a good selection as do the shops in Pooley Bridge, Glenridding and nearby Penrith.

The serious walker might like to tackle the heights of High Street, St Sunday Crag, Fairfield 2863 ft and of course the magnificent Helvellyn 3118ft/950m

The Coast to Coast route crosses the Ullswater valley from Helvellyn, through Patterdale, over High Street to Haweswater and Shap. We now have a page dedicated to the Coast to Coast Walk in Patterdale. See our favourite Coast 2 Coast B&B in Patterdale.

There are also many dales leading off the Ullswater valley that rise steadily into the surrounding high hills offering challenging walks and glorious views.

The National Trust owns over 16,800 acres of land around Ullswater. They have been responsible for creating and maintaining some lovely footpaths which meander from lake shore, through ancient woodland and onto open fells. Their short walks leaflets are now, unfortunately, out of print but the guide at their Information point at Aira Force will happily advise you.

The Lake District National Park Authority Tourist Information Centre at Glenridding sells a variety of leaflets, maps and guide books about walking in the area. They also conduct a series of FREE GUIDED WALKS with National Park Wardens who have an excellent knowledge of the area and will tell you all about the history, flora and fauna. For information contact the Tourist Information Centre.
